Looking for a hidden gem near Bled?
Wow, what a find! Located in the tiny village of Kupljenik, only a few kms from Bled, the Dolinar-Krainer tourist farm does justice to the phrase ‘a hidden gem’.
The village itself is set on a hill above Bled with far reaching, and stunning, views across the Radovljica plains to the Karavanke Alps. The village itself does not have any facilities (i.e. shops, bars, restaurants), however Bled is nearby where there are a couple of small supermarkets and many other shops. Kupljenik is reached by a long winding road that leads up hill, hence a car is a must for a stay here. The plus side to this is that with no passing traffic and the house being far enough away from the church (bells!), it is perfectly silent and peaceful. Even I, who can usually hear a pin drop, wasn’t able to find fault here.
Come and Rest and Rejuvenate!
The owners live in the adjoining house whilst the new, modern penzion has been thoughtfully and tastefully decorated, each room in a different colour, and furnished with modern yet traditional touches.
Up to 16 guests can be accommodated over the 2 floors of accommodation and a definite plus it that each room (except one smaller room for 2 people) has its own kitchenette with hob and fridge. This makes it ideal for extended stays as you are able to self-cater. The other larger rooms can sleep from 4-6 people.
Each room also has an en-suite bathroom with shower, balcony and cable tv. The whole place was also spotlessly clean. The breakfast room, located on the ground floor, has one of the lovely typical Slovene wood burning stoves as its centrepiece. Breakfast itself is self-service from the bio-corner, including milk and cheese produced by the owners from their goats and sheep. Downstairs there is a further spacious area with a bar and room for holding parties, celebrations, business meetings, training sessions etc.
Besides relaxing at the farm, the region is alive with activities to enjoy
Kupljenik is a great base from which to explore Slovenia. If you visit in the winter, it lies in a perfect position to visit the ski resorts of Kobla, Vogel and Pokljuka.
The owners recalled some previous guests who made Dolinar their base and made daily visits to each of Slovenia’s ski resorts – this is perfectly possible in a small country like Slovenia where nothing is more than a couple of hours drive away.
However, if you prefer to sit back and take in the views, you could also travel with the car train from Bohinjska Bistrica to Most na Soci in the Primorska region of Slovenia and onwards to the coast.
The village of Kupljenik is most known for its 300 metre long cave, locally known as Babji zob which, upon prior arrangement, can be visited with a guide. For climbing enthusiasts there is also a climbing wall and the whole area, being situated in the middle of 2 mountain ranges, the Karavanke and the Julian Alps, has endless opportunities for walks and hikes of various lengths and difficulties.
Don’t think, Book now!
Iza and Lojze from the Dolinar Krainer are waiting for your booking now! As they say,
"Our meadows are still full of flowers and
There is the sound of music coming from our house..."
Don’t forget to mention that Sloveniaforyou told you all about it!
The place we stayed in Kupljenik was the best. I would strongly suggest you look into it for anyone doing Slovenia with a car. It was immaculately clean, gorgeous view, great breakfast, wonderful people and very inexpensive. Everything I look for when traveling to Europe.
The owners were Iza, humorous and fun, and Locza Dolinar, the number one accordian player from Slovenia, now retired. He treated my daughter and I to a few songs, a very special memory. He also taught my daughter how to milk goats.
On their property, overlooking Lake Bled, they built a separate home with 2 apartments and 2 rooms. They did not skimp on materials.
All the bath rooms are tile, floor to ceiling, the kitchen cabinets and wardrobes are solid wood etc.
Their place was rated 4 apples. It is a very short drive from Bled.
