Alpine glory in the land of adventure and freedom!
The small town of Bovec is in the far northwestern corner of Slovenia and it's the combination of the impressive and steep surrounding mountains of the Kanin range
and the famous emerald green Soca River which have earned the town the reputation for being the "adventure capital" of the region.
I love the Soca valley, not least because of the stunning Soca River which never fails to enchant me, as it winds it way through the valley, its emerald greenness seeming almost unreal. I also love the whole area for its numerous outdoor opportunities; hiking, cycling and water sports.
To Jojo or not to Jojo?
Jo Jo Apartments are located in a fantastic position, just metres from the centre of town. Mind you, in Bovec everything is close as it’s only a small town but its attractions lie beyond
the centre in its surroundings.
The apartments are situated in a quiet cul-de-sac adjacent to the Kanin Hotel. There are restaurants and a small supermarket within a 2 minute walk. If you wish to have breakfast, this can be arranged at either the Alp or Kanin Hotels where a full buffet breakfast is available. The apartments have their own parking too.
Inside the apartments are modern, spotlessly clean and very well-equipped with everything you could wish for. My apartment had a kitchen/diner, bathroom and lounge downstairs and 2 bedrooms upstairs (note the winding staircase up to the bedrooms is very narrow and could be difficult to negotiate for anyone with walking difficulties). However the best thing about the apartments must surely be the views; from every direction they are superb.
The owner, Dragan, speaks excellent English and is extremely helpful and accommodating to any requests. He also runs JoffiTours and can organise tours, skiing, transfers and other accommodation as well.
The Great Slovenian Outdoors
As for Bovec itself, well if you like outdoor activities, this is the place for you. There’s something for everyone – for adrenaline junkies you can take to the water in a raft or
kayak on the Soca River or try the downhill mountain bike park on Kanin. There's also a cool new zipline thats recently opened.
If that’s not your thing then how about taking the gondola up to Kanin, from where there are numerous options for either a short nature walk or hiking higher into the mountains, there’s even a fine-dining restaurant up there for a meal with a view! Kanin is the place to be whether winter or summer as in winter it offers Slovenia’s highest ski-resort with peaks up to 2,300 metres, meaning the ski season can last longer than elsewhere and additionally it has also recently been linked with the Italian resort of Sella Nevea, meaning one ski pass enables skiing on both sides of the mountains.
The valley itself offers further countless walking paths, all well-marked many of which criss-cross the Soca river or visit one of the stunning waterfalls nearby such as Slap Boka one of Slovenia’s most powerful waterfalls falling 144 metres. From Bovec it’s a short trip to Kobarid where a visit to the Museum is a must. The museum, which has won several European Awards for Excellence, contains a wealth of information and exhibits from the Battle of the Soca Front (1915-1917) and then there is The Historical Walk which shouldn’t be missed which incorporates what is for me, Slovenia’s most beautiful waterfall Slap Kozjak.
